Project Feature: Cedarhurst of Topeka
Dover Development approached Vessel Architecture with the task of reimagining their existing prototype community and helping them get into more competitive markets. It wasn't just that the design needed a refresh, they wanted to completely rethink how they were creating their buildings. Through a thorough schematic design process, Cedarhurst of Topeka was envisioned.
The architecture draws heavily from the local landscape, reflecting the aesthetics suitable for its prairie and rural context. Modern farmhouse elements have been incorporated to resonate with contemporary tastes, yet the design remains rooted in the vernacular architecture native to Topeka, Kansas through distinct gable lines and a crisp white façade. A key issue with the previous design was its inability to create an internal community and bring its residents together. To remedy this, communal and amenity spaces were innovatively arranged around a "town square," serving as a hub for community activities. Encircling this square are key functions such as the reception, bistro, salon, health center, theater, and dining areas, facilitating accessibility and interaction among residents. The residential unit layout, comprised of 57 assisted living units and 25 memory care units, was redesigned and meticulously planned to maximize natural light penetration, thus improving the indoor living experience.
The community stands as a model of thoughtful, human-centric design. The ultimate outcome has elevated the living experience for the resident seniors, evidenced not just in their daily activities but also in the qualitative improvement of the physical environment. The building is not merely aesthetically pleasing; it serves as a catalyst for interaction and relationship development among residents. Although the building is beautiful, its true distinctiveness lies in the intentional placemaking strategies employed. Residents and visitors alike are not merely attracted to the building; they feel an innate desire to inhabit its spaces.
A prominent feature of the design is the focus on expansive and thoughtfully curated outdoor spaces. At the heart of the assisted living units lies a generous courtyard, equipped with various elements aimed at enhancing resident well-being and social engagement. The courtyard features a meandering pathway, a pergola complemented by a firepit, as well as a dedicated gardening area and shed. Each assisted living unit boasts its own patio, extending the living space into the outdoors and offering residents personal areas for relaxation and leisure. Further enhancing resident and guest experience, an expansive front porch serves as a welcoming threshold to the community. Adjacent to this, the assisted living dining patio amplifies opportunities for residents to engage with the natural environment. This intentional focus on outdoor spaces not only augments aesthetic appeal but also significantly enriches the quality of life for residents, offering them diverse opportunities for interaction, relaxation, and connection with nature.
