How AI Enhances Design and Delivers Value to Our Clients

At Vessel, we continuously explore how emerging technologies can enhance the value we deliver to our clients. Artificial intelligence (AI) is one such tool. In this installment of our AI series, we delve into how AI improves our workflows and helps us bring greater value to our clients.

“General AI” has already revolutionized how we communicate ideas in the earliest phases of a project. We begin with client interviews that help us understand what spaces will be needed and we translate those discussions into detailed square foot requirements and develop early budgets. While this process helps us set realistic expectations, presenting numbers without an aesthetic vision can be dry and unexciting. By incorporating AI-generated images, we can bring breathtaking visuals to our earliest visions. So, instead of just reviewing space tables and budgets, we can express vision and build excitement.

“Narrow AI” for targeted applications has also advanced our process. Tools like Autodesk Forma allow us to analyze site layouts with speed and accuracy. We can modify site plans by adjusting parameters such as unit types, corridor widths, and building orientations. These tools help us assess multiple scenarios in minutes, optimizing sites in ways that traditionally took weeks. Additionally, they provide critical early-stage data, such as square footage and efficiency metrics, empowering clients to make informed decisions sooner.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) also benefits from AI’s potential. Current tools like Autodesk Revit face limitations with large, complex models. Forma’s advanced database technology offers a glimpse into the future of BIM, promising greater capacity and efficiency to handle expansive projects, reducing inefficiencies caused by slow-loading models, and improving collaboration. This shift allows for smoother coordination on even the most intricate projects.

AI’s ability to automate repetitive tasks has streamlined many aspects of our practice. For instance, using AI-assisted tools in programs like SketchUp, we can produce real-time design variations during client meetings. These tools allow us to quickly test design options, respond to feedback, and generate tailored visuals, fostering deeper collaboration and accelerating decision-making.

Vessel is committed to staying on the bleeding edge of AI advancements to better serve our clients. AI is a tool that helps us leverage our expertise to benefit the world. We will continue to innovate and elevate our practice and fulfill our mission of Creating Places Where People Flourish!

This article is part of a series exploring the intersection of architecture and artificial intelligence, aiming to demystify the technology and inspire innovative applications within our industry.
