Private Residence

Our clients love their home, a wonderfully historic American cottage home, featuring roof turrets, yellow brick, aged copper, and coordinating green trim, but were looking to make some changes to expand and better prepare for the future. We envisioned a set of improvements to ensure the home will function as their "forever home" for decades to come. Program requirements included:

  • A Grand Hearth Room for hosting gatherings of up to 50 people;

  • A complete reconfiguration of the upper level of bedrooms;

  • An elevator connecting all levels from basement to new upper-level master suite;

  • Expansion of the existing basement-level woodworking shop; and

  • A new primary entry to better connect the existing garage and driveway.

A large new turret roof sits above the new Grand Hearth Room, a balancing act between integrated design and architectural drama. A second smaller turret adorns the new entry of the home, which is crafted in the round to complement the existing main entry. The elevator shaft tucks into the home and will be covered in natural stone to complement the unique yellow brick of the original home.
